Richthofen earned the respect of pilots on both sides of the war. Richthofen led Jagdgeschwader 1, a deadly German air squadron the Allies called “the flying circus” for its colorful planes, organized flight patterns, and for darting from battlefield to battlefield by train. That plane and its pilot inspired fear in opposing forces. He notched 80 air victories before his death on April 21, 1918, many gunned down from his iconic red triplane. The real Richthofen spent more time shooting down enemy planes than shooting pizza commercials.
